Historic Indiana Project

Historic Indiana En Plein Air

IPAPA artists! Are you ready to paint historic places?
Indiana DNR is partnering with IPAPA to celebrate  some important milestones. It’s the 50th
anniversary of Indiana’s National Register of Historic Places program, and
Indiana is about to have its 2000th entry in the National Register.
DNR manages these programs for Indiana, and is partnering for a touring exhibit
with expanded catalog.

Create your plein air pieces from April 1, 2019 – June 12,
2020.

Entry form for IPAPA members only must be a member in 2019 and 2020

Subject matter must be on the National Register of Historic
Places. The list includes nearly 2000 items: neighborhoods, farms, mills,
parks, archaeological sites, downtowns, bridges, buildings, and more.

How can I tell if it’s National Register-listed?

1.         Go to https://secure.in.gov/apps/dnr/shaard/welcome.html

2.         Log in as a
guest.

3.         From next
screen, select survey type “National Register”

4.         On next
screen, select your county from drop-down menu towards top, then go down to
last item and select “Listed in Both Nat. Reg. and St. Reg.”

5.         Click on
search button. This will display a list of every National Register site in that
county. If you go to an entry, the last tab “PDFs and Photos” will have the
full nomination text AND for districts, a map with the boundaries. This is
important because, for example, Muncie, has a number of historic districts with
hundreds of buildings and street scenes as possible subject matter.
