Kankakee Sands Paint-out New in 2018

New this year to the IPAPA schedule is the Kankakee Sands paint out June 9th. A free, open to all, non-competitive event hosted by The Nature Conservancy, TNC, will give artists unique challenges in this furthest northwestern reserve. Artists will have a wide range of subjects from open prairie with big skies, wetlands, and carpets of native wildflowers in what used to be soybean fields before the restoration. There are rolling woodlands and the vestiges of the town of Conrad, IN, as well as the now drained Beaver lake.Artists can tune into the restoration energy afoot there. Organizers will promote the event in the tri-state area to draw interest from collectors.

The Kankakee Sands reserve is host to the only wild Indiana Bison herd. Visitors are encouraged to stay at least a quarter mile from the herd to help maintain their wild nature, but artists interested to paint them should bring binoculars, zoom lenses, etc to use if they wish to include them in paintings.

Want to learn more about the bison at Kankakee Sands, including where they came from and how they’ll help manage the prairie? Visit nature.org/indianabison!
