Plein Air Pastels — Three Day Workshop with Ray Hassard

Pastels are great for capturing the landscape on site--the jewel-like sticks of pure color are perfect for a
spontaneous approach and a fresh interpretation of landscape or cityscape. Pastel paintings in progress are easily
modified, allowing for experimentation and freedom. In fact, the medium has been called "the easiest of all for creativity".

We will discuss Pastel basics: materials, methods of correcting, soft over
hard, layering colors Logistics of pastel painting en plein air; transporting
pastels while travelling Getting started: finding a subject, doing thumbnail sketches, establishing a
composition The five basics: composition, shapes, value, color, and edges.
Working wet with pastels. We will do a few very good (and fun) exercises. Each day
will start with a demo and end with a group critique.

Between the two, you can expect lots of personal attention
as you work on your own painting.

Artists at all levels are welcome.
